Is a 10% Annual Rate of Return an achievable goal in a stock market investment?

BRIEF DISCUSSION ON INVESTING IN THE STOCK MARKET

Those who are a proponent of the stock market say that the stock market provides the highest rate of return of all investments, considering all factors.
Those who are a proponent of real estate investment say that real estate provides the highest rate of return on all investments considering all factors, and more millionaires are created by real estate investment.

You should consider investing in both and thus diversify ("don't put all your eggs in one basket").

Following is some history and basic facts about the stock market to understand the investment process:

HISTORY
Most likely temples and holy places first had played the role of bank, money lenders and changers (a).
"In 12th century France the courratiers de change were concerned with managing and regulating the debts of agricultural communities on behalf of the banks. Because these men also traded with debts, they could be called the first brokers." (b)courratiers de change  ? meant courtier de change = Exchange trader

First the city of Bruges (Country of Flanders = "a geographical region located in parts of present-day Belgium, France, and Netherlands. Reference. Flanders. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flanders), followed by Antwerp and Amsterdam were the primary trading place for most  of the merchants in 13th century (c).
Mid 13th century, Venetian bankers, followed by Pisa, Verona, Genoa, and Florence, began trading in government securities.
The Amsterdam Stock Exchange, later named Amsterdam Bourse, was established in 1602 by the  Dutch East India Company (Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie, or "VOC") and issued stocks and bonds. It is considered the world's first stock  exchange (a, c, d).

History of US Market.
" Historically, the colonial government decided to finance the war by selling bonds and government notes, promising to pay out at profit at a later date. Around the same time private banks began to raise money by issuing stocks, or shares of the company, to raise their own money."
Origin of New York Stock Exchange (NYSE):
In 1792, 24 merchants met to trade stocks and bonds on a street market in New York City. This ultimately lead to the creation of the New York Stock Exchange(NYSE).
In 1921, street market trading moved indoors.

BULL & BEAR MARKET

"The use of "bull" and "bear" to describe markets comes from the way the animals attack their opponents. A bull thrusts its horns up into the air while a bear swipes its paws down. These actions are metaphors for the movement of a market. If the trend is up, it's a bull market. If the trend is down, it's a bear market." Usually,  Dow Jones and S & P 500 indices are used to determine the market bull and bear trends.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bear_market

Bear market rally:

A temporary increase during a bear market. Example of this is the rise of the stock market between 2002 and 2007 inside a secular bear market that started in 2000 as in the SPY graph below. You can see other such examples in the secular Japanese bear market that started in 1989 and is still on in 2010,  with 4/5 bear market rallies as well during this period.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bear_market

d) Any combination of a, b & c.

http://www.investorwords.com/443/bear_market.html

Average duration of bear market ranges from a few months (3-4) to about 2 years.
The l
ongest bear market was from 1965 to 1982 (17 years cycle*) in the USA.

The most famous bear market:

T
he stock market crash started in 1929 and lasted from 1930 to 1932. The great depression started after this.
Recent Bear markets: 1973 to 1982 and 2000 and continued with a rally between 2002-2007.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bear_market#Bear_market)/
2002

Presently, the market has been in a long term (secular) bear market from 2000 and is continuing (2010).
Historically, this secular bear market is likely to last from 16 to 21 years or 2016 to 2021 (please see the Table below 71 A).

Secular (long term) Bull and Bear markets:

Following is a
n analysis of the Secular Bear Markets and Secular Bull Markets since 1900.
Since 1900, three Secular Bull Markets and three Secular Bear Markets have been noted. The last secular bear market started 2000. These are  shown in the Table 71A below:

Table 71 B is part of Table 71 A. If you try to analyze this table, it shows that the Dow Jones average has not fallen enough between 2000 to 2008 (in the midst of secular bear market), to catch up with the previous three secular bear markets. On the other hand, during the same period the S & P 500 index has fallen too much to compare to the previous three bear markets.

Bull Markets can arise lasting few years inside the secular Bear market. Presently, the market is in a long term (secular) bear market from 2000 and now. This could last up to 16 to 21 years. Inside this secular bear market, a bull market developed between 2003 and 2007, back to bear market again till March, 2009 and has been rallying (bull) since then.
