POMEGRANATE
Pomegranate, beside preventing and reversing CAD, also prevents cancer, and promote healthy skin by its powerful
abundant antioxidant punicalagins
- Pomegranate increases the synthesis of nitric oxide, required for healthy arterial endothelial function,
- protect nitric oxide from oxidative degradation,
- reduces coronary plaque buildup,
- reverses atherosclerosis,
- inhibits LDL oxidation,
- reduces blood pressure, and
- oxidative stress.
Nineteen patients from the Vascular Surgery Clinic in Haifa, Israel,
were selected to participate in this three-year trial.
19 subjects between
age 65 and 75, with 70-90% asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis. Ten subjects consumed 50 ml of pomegranate juice daily. The
other nine control group received a placebo drink and continued their on going drug regimens. All had similar diet and lifestyles
during the trial.
After three months, in the treated group had an average carotid artery thickness declined by 13%, and 35% after 12 months
from baseline.
The average thickness of the carotid artery among the placebo group increased by 9% after 12 months. The
peak systolic velocity of the blood in the carotid arteries fell, and systolic blood pressure dropped by 21% after 12 months. All
desired laboratory investigations of the treated group stayed unchanged.
Total antioxidant
blood level increased by 130% and serum paraoxonase-1 by 83% after 12 months. Paraoxonase-1 can reduce harmful
lipid peroxides in arterial cells and in lipoproteins in atherosclerotic lesions, and helps break up of existing plaques.
LDL need to be oxidized before it can adhere to the arterial wall
and damage it. Lipid peroxidation was reduced by 59%
after 12 months among treated group Treated group had LDL oxidation initiation time, increased from 30 minutes to 65 minutes
after 12 months.
Delays in oxidation and increased
antioxidants in the blood prevent new plaque build up.
16% further reduction
in lipid peroxidation at 36 months. Pomegranate is required to continue to maintain the improvement. 9-11
50 ml
pomegranate daily reduces both systolic blood pressure by 5% and serum angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) activity byb 36% after only two weeks. ACE activity helps to prevent atherosclerosis independent of
its effects on blood pressure,12

Pomegranate juice for atherosclerosis Pomegranate juice appears to be beneficial in reducing oxidation
of lipids and may reduce the risk for atherosclerosis.
Anti-oxidative effects of pomegranate juice consumption by diabetic patients on serum and on macrophages. Atherosclerosis.
2006. "We thus conclude that pomegranate juice consumption by diabetic patients did not worsen the diabetic parameters,
but rather resulted in anti-oxidative effects on serum and macrophages, which could contribute to attenuation of atherosclerosis
development in these patients."
